项目摘要

本年度は、学会誌・紀要などに論文を発表するのをあえて控え、博士論文という全体を完成させることに尽力した。まず、北村透谷の創作作品(特に『楚囚之詩』と『蓬莢曲』)におけるバイロン受容の問題について、先行研究の成果を批判的に継承しつつ検証を行なった。その結果、これらの作品において、透谷が、自己完結的に閉じているように見えるバイロン的自我の中に、外部世界に自己を開いてゆくための因子を見出し、それを最大限肯定的に評価することで、自身の内なる「負のロマン主義」(M.ペッカム)を克服しようとしていた、という事実を確認することができた。また、透谷の死以降の『文學界』同人におけるバイロン熱の帰趨がどのようなものであったのか、という、前年度から考究してきた論点について、特に島崎藤村に注目しながら、議論を補強する作業を行なった。藤村は、バイロンとの〈歌のわかれ〉を早々に行なった他の同人達と違い、変形化したかたちの「縄墨打破」的バイロン熱を燻らせ続け(『春』)、所謂「新生」事件を契機として、大正期にそれを瞬間的に再燃させるのだが、やがて「父」の発見を媒介とする歴史的自我の獲得によって、そのバイロン熱の炎を鎮静化させてゆく(『海へ』)。このような藤村の自我の軌跡を辿れたことは、『文學界』的バイロニズムの運命を見届けられたという意味で、収穫であった。さらに、従来殆ど本格的に論じられることのなかった、明治末期から大正期にかけてのバイロン言説について検証を試みた。この、言わばバイロン熱の谷間の時期に当たるバイロン言説のありようについての整理は、前年度までに行なってきた、その前後の時期のバイロン熱についての議論をつなぐという意味を持つものであり、有意義であった。以上の本年度の研究成果を踏まえ、前年度までの研究成果と併せつつ、博士論文「日本におけるバイロン熱」を、2011年3月25日、東京大学総合文化研究科に提出した。
