We demonstrated that mast cells constitutively expressed Notch1 and Notch2 on the cell surface, and Notch signaling induced the expression of MHC class II molecules and the costimulatory molecule OX40L on the mast cells. Furthermore, we showed that MHC class II+OX40L+ mast cells functioned as an antigen-presenting cell for CD4+ T cells and induced the differentiation of Th2. These results suggest that the mast cells as the antigen-presenting cells involve in the development of allergic diseases.
