Study of the Historical Transformation of the English Language Education in South Korea and its importance in the South Korean Language Policy

本研究项目的主要成果可概括如下。首先，收集和整理了韩国语言和教育政策的基本数据和材料，并构建了一部韩国语言和教育政策的全面历史。其次，对韩国小学、高中和英语村等英语教学机构进行了调研访问，并对上述机构的人员进行了访谈。第三，从美国国家档案和记录管理局收集了有关美国占领韩国期间(1945-48年)英语教育政策的数据和材料。第四，对朝鲜的英语教育和英语教材进行了研究，以期与韩国的英语教育进行比较。部分研究成果已在日本亚洲英语协会和中部英语教育学会组织的会议上发表，后来发表在该杂志和这些组织的时事通讯上，以及我写的这本书。这项研究的最终结果将在不久的将来发表在书籍和学术期刊上。

The main results of this research project can be summarized as follows. First, fundamental data and materials of the language and education policies in South Korea were collected and classified ; and a comprehensive history of the South Korean language and education policies was constructed. Second, research visits to English-teaching institutions in South Korea such as primary schools, high schools and the English Village were carried out and interviews were undertaken with people from the above institutions. Third, data and materials concerning the English language education policy during the U.S Occupation of South Korea (1945-48) were collected from the United States National Archives and Records Administration. Forth, research on the English education and English language textbooks in North Korea was conducted in order to make a comparison with the English education in South Korea. Part of the research results had been presented at conferences organized by the Japanese Association for Asian Englishes and the Chubu English Language Education Society and were later published in the journal and the newsletter of those organizations and the book written by myself. The final results of this research are to be released in books and academic journals in the near future.
