<研究の目的とその達成>本研究の目的は、ジンバブエの政治、宗教における音楽文化の位置づけを明らかにすることであった。研究を通じ、白人入植以前のジンバブエ社会においては、音楽、宗教、政治の3点が、祖霊信仰の3大要素になっていることが分かった。キリスト教や西洋型議会制度が導入された現在も、祖霊信仰はショナ族の基層文化である。具体的な研究の内容とその成果は以下の通りある。<研究1.ショナ社会における音楽の研究>・儀礼音楽研究主に祖霊信仰の儀礼における音楽を観察した。ニャンドーロ地域では、氏族の祖霊(霊媒師)の集まる儀礼が行われていた。儀礼における音楽演奏の目的は2つであることが分かった。一つは祖霊への奉納であった。音楽の演奏は、祖霊への祈りの一様式だと考えられていた。もう一つは、儀礼をより神聖化する目的である。このような祖霊信仰と音楽との関係から、儀礼で親指ピアノ(mbira)を演奏する楽師(Gwenyambira)は祖霊信仰のシンボルとして、人々から敬意を表されていた。<研究2.ショナ社会における宗教の現状>ジンバブエでは伝統宗教とキリスト教の混交が著しい。キリスト教会で祖霊の憑依が起きたり、ある霊媒師が聖書の物語を氏族の歴史であると考えている事例などは、宗教混交の証拠である。ニャンドーロ地域における儀礼研究から、霊媒師が氏族長の任命に関わるなど、白人入植以前のジンバブエでは、氏族政治の中心に祖霊信仰があることもわかった。<研究3.ジンバブエの政治史>ジンバブエの年長者への聞き取りから、伝統的氏族政治の調査をおこなった。ショナ族の慣習では、父系氏族が政治組織を形成していた。かつては霊媒師が氏族長を任命し、白人入植後は政府が首長を任命することになった。ニャンドーロ地域では、政府の任命する首長と、霊媒師の任命する首長が異なっており、人々の間では両首長に従うことがためらわれているようであった。
