项目摘要

昨年度までの研究から得られた成果を踏まえ、今年度は現地での一次文献や作品のさらなる収集と分析を行った。とりわけ着目したのは、昨年度から取り上げている信徒会の注文によって制作された祭壇画のなかでも、ペスト流行期に制作されたとみられる作品である。ペストの終息を祈願して、もしくは終息を感謝して制作された祭壇画にみられる聖人像の表現とその変遷、聖人への信仰、そして、信仰に基づく新たなる表現の再生産のサイクルを取り上げた。というのも、会員たちが集い、都市のなかで活動する場であるために「公」的であるといえる信徒会が、ペストという危機を前にして、一個の共同体として凝縮し、「私」的な側面を強く押し出していった経緯がそこにみられるからである。具体的には、15世紀から19世紀初めにかけてイタリア、フランス、ドイツを中心に信仰された聖人で、ペスト患者をはじめとする病人や巡礼者、墓掘り人夫を守護すると信じられてきたロクスを考察の対象とした。一般的に聖人信仰は、その聖人と関わりがある地域や職業、団体と結びついて発展することが多かった一方で、このようなカテゴリーを超え、広範囲にわたって信仰を集める聖人もいた。そのひとりがロクスだったのである。考察の結果、信徒会の結束力を増す一手段として、ロクスに理想的な信徒像という特徴が付与された経緯が明らかとなった。以上の考察からは、これまでの美術史では取り上げられることの少なかった地方の作品や逸名の画家の作品にも光を当てることができた。加えて、芸術理論だけにとどまることなく、注文主である信徒会の規約や注文書ならびに描かれる聖人の伝記なども考察対象として取り上げた。従来の美術史に加え、芸術人類学や聖人伝記学などの手法を取り入れたことで、より多面的な「公」「私」概念の解釈が可能となっただろう。
