今年度前半には,大きく三つの研究成果を得た。(1)「手工芸」に関わるウィリアム・モリスの言説を解読することを通して,かれの芸術理解と社会理解に通底する思索の構造を明らかにし,モリスの制作論における共同性の問題とともに,日本建築学会計画系査読論文としてまとめた。(2)前年度明らかにしたモリスの1880年代の制作論がアーツ・アンド・クラフツ運動の創始期に英国の装飾芸術家,建築家,都市計画家にどのように受容されたかということを〈life〉という概念をめぐって研究し,その成果を論文として執筆し,その内容に基づいた口頭発表を行った。モリスが1880年代に提示する「慎みある生活」には人間の主体性と生活環境の美化が求められること,モリスらは,「慎みある生活」に伴う外的環境を包括する全体的な「生命」を措定していること,アーツ・アンド・クラフツ運動では諸物の関係性についての「構成的感覚」が重要視されていることを取り上げた。(3)モリスの1890年代の制作論を研究し,論文執筆および口頭発表した。主として1890年代のモリスの書物に関する論考を取り上げ,その倫理的側面の一端を明らかにした。今年度後半,2010年12月に,「ウィリアム・モリスの生活芸術思想に関する建築論的研究」という題目により京都大学博士学位請求論文を提出し,2011年3月に京都大学博士(工学)の学位を取得した。これまでの研究成果をモリスの装飾芸術論,住まい論,社会主義論,書物論という四つの枠組みによりまとめ,最終章において,モリスの生活芸術思想における倫理的内容を整理し,その倫理性に依拠する制作のあり方を提示するとともに,それが現代の生活環境や地球環境の問題に反省的視座を与える可能性を論じた。
