Forests play a crucial role in regulating our climate because of theirability to sequester the trace gas carbon dioxide. However, thisecosystem function is influenced by global change processes. On the one hand, climate change, elevated atmospheric CO2 and nitrogen deposition act as continuous forcings altering the physiological carbon balance of the vegetation. On the other hand, natural and anthropogenic disturbances can release CO2 in a flush-type manner, alter functioning by redistributing carbon pools and impact population processes like dispersal, recruitment and mortality. Continuous forcings and disturbance interact in controllig the carbon cycle. The objective of my research is to partition between these two effect categories in boreal and European temperate forests. As a tool I will use a new biosphere model (the ecosystem-demography-model), that addresses both ecophysiological processes and population dynamics in forest ecosystems. The modelling component will be accompanied by meta-analysis of boreal forest datasets and field campaigns in Far East Siberia for validation purposes. I will carry out my research in Princeton (USA), Krasnoyarsk (Russia) and Fairbanks (Alaska, USA).
