项目摘要

本研究は日本における如意輪観音像の展開に注目し、特に中世に日本独自の像形式があらわれた背景を解明しようとするものである。昨年度は、その背景に醍醐寺の如意輪観音信仰が密接に関わっていたこと、そして醍醐寺僧および後白河院を中心とする人的ネットワークが関与していたことを明らかにした。本年度はさらに、中世の天皇や法皇が盛んに行わせた如意宝珠を本尊とする修法と如意輪観音信仰の関係、および日本独自の如意輪観音像の展開と王権の関わりについて検討を行った。その結果、1.如意宝珠信仰が盛行した背景には、醍醐寺の如意輪観音信仰が深く関わっていたこと、2.院政期以降、醍醐寺僧が独自の如意輪観音信仰によって宮中に進出していたことを見出した。当時の天皇や法皇が如意輪観音の功徳に期待し、醍醐寺が独自の如意輪観音信仰の創出によってこれに応えようとする中で、他国には例のない如意輪観音像の展開が生み出された可能性が高い。すなわち院政期の真言密教が王権と結びつきながら飛躍的な発展を遂げる過程で、これら醍醐寺を拠点として生み出された日本独自の如意輪観音像が、重要な役割を担ったことが推察される。なお1については「宝珠法の成立と如意輪観音信仰」(2011年10月巡礼記研究会第8回研究集会)として研究発表を行い、2については「院政期の王権と如意輪観音信仰」(2012年1月第142回奈良美術研究会)として口頭発表を行った上で、論文「後白河院と如意輪観音信仰の関わりをめぐる一試論」(『奈良美術研究』12号、2012年2月)として発表した。そしてこれらを昨年度の研究成果とあわせて博士学位請求論文(『院政期真言密教をめぐる如意輪観音の造像と信仰』)としてまとめ、早稲田大学より学位の授与を受けた。このほか醍醐寺の史料調査に参加し現地で中世史の研究者から、今後の具体的な研究手法について多くの貴重な助言を得ることができた。
