本研究は、イギリスの社会学者バジル・バーンスティンの理論転回、特にその教育コード理論の形成過程を思想史的に裏付けるものである。研究方法として中心となるのは、まず、バーンスティンの著作の読解と、次に、バーンスティンに関する二次文献の読解であった。バーンスティンの主要な論考は、『階級、コード、統制』(Class, Codes, Control, I~IV, Routledge, London, 2008)という全4巻の論集に収められている。この論集を中心に、バーンスティンの理論展開を、時代を追って内在的に検証した。そして、バーンスティンに影響を与えた同時代の再生産論、特にピエール・ブルデューの諸著作を合わせて読解し、バーンスティン理論との比較研究を試みた。これによって、従来「文化的再生産論」として共通の枠に括られることが多かった、バーンスティンとブルデューの理論的相違を明らかにすることが可能となり、それによって、バーンスティン理論の独自性がいっそう明らかにされるための理論的端緒を獲得しえた。それは、「文化的再生産」概念と「文化的消費」概念の峻別である。研究内容として中心となったのは、バーンスティン理論の変遷の中でも、とりわけ「コード」概念の変遷を検証することである。バーンスティンの理論展開は、1950年代、1960年代、1970年代、1980年代以降、の4つの画期に分けることができるが、各時期におけるコード理論の内実は異なっていた。この変遷の過程を、再生産論など、同時代の政治思想からの影響関係に着目しながら、明らかにしていった。本研究はまだ道半ばであるが、この成果は、2011年中に何らかの形で公刊する予定である。
