沖縄県においては、その歴史的・政治的・社会的状況により、比較的多くのインターナショナルスクールが存在し、バイリンガル教育が実践されている。それぞれの設立経緯や教育方針が異なるだけでなく、当然ながら就学している児童のレベルや目標とする言語レベルにもそれぞれに大きな相違点がみられる。しかしながら、これまでのこれらの教育実践の相違点について、バイリンガル教育の専門的見地から分析されたことはない。本研究では、沖縄県におけるバイリンガル教育の具体的実践の特徴を明らかにし、欧米型のバイリンガル教育との比較に於いてその特徴を明らかにすることが目的であった。初年度においては、まず、バイリンガリズムに関する資料を収集し、従来のバイリンガル教育理論や実践の特徴を整理する準備を始めるとともに、県内のインターナショナルスクールの教育実践の調査を始めた。那覇市楚辺にあるオキナワインターナショナルスクール(Okinawa International School (OIS))を訪問し、代表の知念正人氏にインタビューをし、学校設立の経緯、教育目的、カリキュラム等の概要に関する情報を得た。以下がそのまとめである。当校は国際バカロレアカリキュラムを基礎とし、創立7年目を迎える比較的新しいインターナショナルスクールである。現在1歳児から小学4年生までの幼児学童が在籍し、それぞれの年齢に応じたカリキュラムに従い、学習している。在学生のほとんどが日本人であり、また、OISも外国人子弟ではなく日本人対象にバイリンガル教育をしている。教員数は全部で17人(日本人8人・外国人9人)、小学部の在学生は小学1年生(13人)、2年生(13人)、3年生(3人)、4年生(7人)となっている。平成21年8月29日より研究代表者が産前産後休暇及び育児休業を取得することとなり、それに伴い補助事業廃止の手続きを取らざるを得なくなった為、本研究課題についても平成21年8月末までの実績において中止することとなった。
