The study investigated the effect of learning environment on L2 story telling processes. High intermediate level EFL and ESL learners whose L1 is Japanese narrated stories within conversation with English native speakers. The results revealed that 1) irrespective of learning environment, inappropriate use of articles and pronouns were found in learner narratives, and 2) EFL and ESL learners displayed differing patterns in telling stories. Specifically, the EFL learners tended to tell monologic narratives, whereas the ESL learners were inclined to involve their native speaker interlocutors using discourse markers such as 'you know'and 'okay'.The research demonstrated persistent difficulty with the use of linguistic forms that do not exist in learners' L1 system despite abundant positive evidence ESL environment provides. Moreover, the study implied the importance of providing pedagogical intervention to teach pragmatics such as discourse markers and interactional strategies.

本研究探讨了学习环境对二语故事讲述过程的影响。以日语为母语的高中水平英语和英语为第二语言的学习者在与英语为母语的人的对话中讲述故事。研究结果表明：1）无论学习环境如何，学生在叙述中均存在不恰当的冠词和代词使用; 2）EFL和ESL学生在讲述故事时表现出不同的模式。具体来说，EFL学习者倾向于讲述独白式的叙述，而ESL学习者则倾向于使用诸如“you know”和“okay”等话语标记语与母语者对话。研究表明，尽管ESL环境提供了大量的积极证据，但学习者在使用母语系统中不存在的语言形式方面仍然存在困难。此外，本研究还暗示了在话语标记语和插话策略等语用学教学中提供教学干预的重要性。
