The focus of this study is to analyze the ethnic consciousness the mountain dwelling people called “Dayak” of Borneo, in the changing modern society. In Borneo the word “Dayak” was used from old days, contrasted to the “Malay” who live in the plain area subsisted on the wet rice cultivation. It was expected that the formation of modern nation states since the colonial era might weaken this sharp contrast between these two styles of livelihoodsthrough modernization and urbanization. But the intensive field study of revealed that the ethnicity of the Dayak people is strengthened in the urban area, and the activities of the various ethnic societies and the Christian churches influence the ethnic identity of the Dayak people in the urban settings of Borneo.

本研究的重点是分析婆罗洲山地居民“达雅”在现代社会变迁中的族群意识。在婆罗洲，“Dayak”这个词是从旧时代开始使用的，与居住在平原地区以湿稻种植为生的“马来人”形成对比。殖民地时代以来现代民族国家的形成，可能会通过现代化和城市化来削弱这两种类型的殖民地之间的鲜明对比。但是，深入的实地研究表明，达雅克人的种族性在城市地区得到加强，各种种族社会和基督教教会的活动影响了达雅克人在婆罗洲城市环境中的种族认同。
