A cognitive linguistic study of "construal" and of the influence which the difference in construal has on second language acquisition

The purpose of the present project is to examine whether the habitual difference in construal between Japanese and Korean speakers has any effect on the way they learn their second languages. For this purpose, I have requested both Japanese and Korean speakers to comment on a number of passages written in their respective native languages. My investigation, has revealed that in general, speakers of Japanese tend toward ‘subjective construal’ more readily than Korean speakers and that Korean learners of Japanese are found often using subjectiv e construal excessively, while Japanese learners of Korean tend to be rather restrictive in their use of subjective construal.
