This study investigates the efficacy of the concept of physical sensitivity, or kansei in young children; it particularly focuses on the physical interactions that result from a child being imitated by others. Qualitative and quantitative analyses were conducted on cases collected through the authors' observations in kindergarten, and from surveys of nursery and kindergarten teachers.The results demonstrated (1) that the performance of physical imitation originates from a child being imitated by others, (2) the role played by physical imitation in governing physical interactions, and (3) the particular developmental characteristics observed in the physical interactions of 3-, 4-, and 5-year-olds.
