The birth of the comparable study on modern society: Struggle for the morality in late developed capitalism in Germany and Japan

资本主义国家的民族精神有两个方面：精神促进资本主义，资本主义调节精神。马克思·韦伯通过对禁欲主义新教的研究探讨了前者，卡尔·拉特根在近代日本考察了后者。他们相互学习，希望重建一战后德国的民族精神。同样，涩泽英一希望在日本建立商业道德和健全的民族精神。

National spirit in a capitalistic state has two aspects: spirit promotes the capitalism, and capitalism regulates the spirit. Max Weber inquired into the former aspect through the study of ascetic protestantism, and Karl Rathgen investigated the latter aspect in the modern Japan. They learned from each other and wished to reconstruct the national spirit of Germany after the First World War. Similarly Eiichi Shibusawa hoped to establish commercial morality and sound national spirit in Japan.
