项目摘要

本研究は、社会的・文化的背景が異なる国において、学生の英語読解力が何によって規定されているかを明らかにし、比較することである。対象国は、標題にあるとおりスリランカ、日本及びラオスを予定していたが、平成23年度当初に行った予備調査の結果、ラオス人大学生の英語読解力がテストの信頼性を確保できないほど低いことがわかったため、ラオスをカンボジアに変更した。平成24年度には、前年度に日本、カンボジア及びラオスの大学において行ったテスト(読解力、語彙力、文法力、接続詞、接頭語・接尾語に関する5つのテスト)とアンケート調査の入力を終わらせるとともに、AMOSを用いてSEM分析を行い、3つの国において読解力に影響を与える要因を抽出した、読解力は、どの国においても語彙や文法等の分野別の英語能力に直接的に依拠していた。しかし、どの分野の能力が読解力に大きな影響を及ぼすかは、国によって異なっていた。例えば、スリランカでは語彙力、日本では文法能力の影響が突出していたが、これはシンハラ語がインドヨーロッパ語族に属し、英語と共通の文法体系をもっていたのに対し、日本語が英語と異なる文法構造をもっていたためと考えられる。内的意欲及び外的意欲は、読解力に直接的に影響を及ぼしていなかったが、様々な形で分野別の英語能力に影響を与えており、そのパターンは国によって異なっていた。日本及びスリランカでは、内的意欲が英語の各分野の能力に影響を与えていたが、外的意欲はむしろ負の影響をもたらしていた。意欲が総体として極めて高く、学生間の変異が少なかったカンボジアでは、意欲の影響は明らかにならなかった。研究の結果を学会での口頭発表及び論文の形で発表した。論文については、2編が投稿・査読中であり、他の3編を近く投稿する予定である。
