Past research has shown that Japanese are, despite their highly collectivistic orientations, relatively lower on relational self, one's self-construal in relationship with close others, than other cultural groups. In my project, I focused on the within-culture difference in East Asia, regarding that Koreans appear to be higher on relational self than Japanese people. Based on theoretical concerns in previous research, I attempted to distinguish two different aspects of relational self based on focus-orientations in interpersonal relationships (self-focused relational self and other-focused relational self), and examined the different aspects between Japan and Korea as well as relationships between different self-construals and well-being.
