本研究は、総合的地域研究の方法論に立脚し、国際コミュニケーション研究の分析枠組を援用しながら、20世紀半ば以降のアラブ世界において、現代アラブ世界のメディア秩序がどのように形成され、そして展開してきたのかを明らかにすることを目的としている。とくに最終年度にあたる平成24年度には、(1)メディアシティと呼ばれるメディア企業向けの経済特区に焦点をあててアラブ世界のメディア産業の変容を明らかにすること、また(2)2011年1月以来のアラブ世界における大規模な政治変動「アラブの春」とメディアとの相互作用的な関係を明らかにすることの2つを目的に掲げて研究を進めた。(1)現在アラブ世界ではメディア企業の誘致を目的とした経済特区であるメディアシティ建設の動きが活発化している。こうしたメディアシティの実態とその産業的な意義を明らかにするために、これまでの研究成果をもとにして英語と日本語で論文執筆をおこなった。同時に、そうした成果を日本語と英語で発表した。メディアシティに関する研究はその重要性にも関わらず僅少であるため、本研究で得られた成果はアラブ世界のメディアを理解するうえで重要な意義があると考えられる。(2)2011年1月のチュニジアのジャスミン革命に端を発したアラブ世界の大規模な政治変動「アラブの春」ではメディアの役割がとくに注目を集めた。そこで「アラブの春」とメディアとの関係についての論文を執筆した。また、研究を通じて得られた成果を学会のみならず、一般向けの市民講座にて発表した。総合すると、最終年度となる平成24年度にはこれまでの研究成果を論文および発表というかたちで積極的に発信することができた。
