戦前日本の代表的哲学者である西田幾多郎の思索は1926年の論文「場所」を中心とする諸論考に示された場所論によって独自の体系性・論理性を獲得し、「西田哲学」が成立したといわれている。場所論の形成に向かう時期、彼は新カント学派を介してカント哲学を学び、そこから多くのアイデアを獲得しているが、これまでカント哲学との関係で西田哲学をとらえる研究は十分なされてこなかった。本研究の目的は、場所論を中心とする西田の形而上学とカントの形而上学とを対置することにあるが、本年度はとりわけ場所論の形成と新カント学派など同時代性の観点から研究することを予定していた。本年度はとりわけ、西田と新カント学派との関係が具体的に見えてきた。従来、西田と新カント学派は対立の構造の中で捉えられてきた。だが、西田自身の議論を見てみると、彼は判断的認識の基礎に意志ないし当為を見る議論を西南学派から受け取ったと考えている。西南学派では、現実が文化的意識、規範的意識によって切り出されることによって学の対象となると考え、自然科学的な存在に対して価値や当為の固有の権利を擁護しようとした。西田は自然科学的存在に対して文化的なものの固有の意義を擁護する西南学派のこうした態度と同様の関心を持っており、西田が自身の立場を「主意主義」という場合においても、その意志は単に非合理的、生物学的な意志ではなく、文化的な意志であった。また西田と新カント学派との差異は彼らの〈心的なもの〉を巡る理解、とりわけその時間的性格に関係することも明らかになった。この問題は、西田の時間論とも関係し、その際、彼がカント哲学をどのように利用したかが注目される。
