本研究は、インドのヒンドゥー教の祖先祭祀・死生観について、聖典の記述をふまえながら現代の実態を明らかにすることを目的としている。本年度の成果は以下の3点である。1. 紀元前1千年紀後半から紀元後1千年紀前半頃までに成立したとされる複数のサンスクリット語文献の、祖先祭祀の規則における祭祀対象の変遷を分析し、論文を執筆・投稿した(査読中)。元来は父・祖父・曾祖父のみが対象であった儀礼において、しだいにそれぞれの妻(母・祖母・曾祖母)や母方の死者たちも対象になることが分かった。父方および母方の死者を一つの儀礼において祀ることは、現在の祖先祭祀まで引き継がれている。祭祀対象の点では、現代における規則がこの時期に作られたものと一致することが明らかとなった。2. 現代のヒンドゥー教世界において祖先祭祀を行うのに最も適切な聖地とされている、ビハール州のガヤーにおいて、9月18日から10月4日までの「ピトリ・パクシャ(祖霊の半月)」期間を中心に調査を実施した。同調査は、来年度からガヤーで行う調査の予備調査であったが、同地の構造や聖職者組織、巡礼者の意図について部分的ではあるが把握することができた。3. 「聖典の記述をふまえながら現代の実態を明らかにすること」の遂行方針を検討した。先の調査で、サンスクリット語の聖典を引用しながらガヤーの縁起譚や儀礼の規則を記載する廉価版の複数の冊子が、ガヤーで売られ実際に使用されていることが分かった。こうした伝統の継承の形態を、現代から遡る形で明らかにすることは、現代の実態を分析する際に深みを与えると思われる。ただし、文献と実態を俯瞰する観察者がそれらの繋がりを見つける一方で、実践者自身の意識からそれを掘り起こす試みも必要である。本研究は、インド研究における文献学的研究と人類学的研究の架け橋となることを目標としているが、その第一歩を踏み出せたのではないかと考える。
