项目摘要

18世紀末から19世紀初頭という史学史上の転換期に思想形成したB・G・ニーブーアは、歴史叙述と政治学との密着という伝統と、歴史学の学的自律化という新傾向の双方を同時に体現した知識人だった。つまり、従来の歴史家に見られる伝承の無批判的な受容を批判し、厳密な史料操作を通じて史実を確定する技術(近代的史料批判)の確立者である一方、彼のローマ史研究は、歴史研究それ自体を自己目的とみなすものではなかった。ニーブーアのローマ史研究は、何よりもまずフランス革命をめぐる当時の政治的議論に触発されたものであった。本研究の目的は、史学史と政治学史の結節点となるニーブーアの政治思想を、同時代の政治的議論との関連で解明することにある。先行研究の多くが伝記・史学方法論・ローマ史解説の分野に集中しているに対して、本研究は、ニーブーアのローマ史論と、同時代の政治的言論空間との相互作用の分析に重点を置く。研究実施計画に沿った、順調な進展が見られた。本年度の大部分は、先行研究の精査と基礎的な原典史料の読解に費やされた。4月から9月末にかけてのニーブーア先行研究、ニーブーアが依拠した古代の歴史家リウィウスに関する代表的な先行研究の調査、10月から翌年3月末にかけてのニーブーアのローマ史論関係の史料の読解のいずれも、順調に進展した。5月末から6月初にかけては、フランクフルト国立図書館において、日本では入手困難な二次文献の調査を行い、当地のマックス・プランク欧州法史研究所においてM. StolleisおよびH. Mohnhaunt両氏から研究上の助言を得られたことも大きかった。また、史学史に関する最新の研究書を『国家学会雑誌』にて書評する機会にも恵まれた。本研究の成果については、2014年5月末の政治思想学会(自由論題の部)において、「十八・十九世紀転換期におけるローマ王政期解釈の政治学」と題した報告を行う予定である。
