项目摘要

平安時代摂関期から院政前期の貴族の日記（古記録）において、公卿や殿上人の集団の中で、弁官の職にある者だけが他の官人と異なる装束を着ている場面が散見する。このような他とは異なる弁官の装束が、いかなる意味を持つのかを研究課題として検討した。弁官は実務官僚として重視されていたため、官職任命その他の利益を求めて権勢者に追従するというような行為は、軽々しいものであり、本来的に好ましくないことと見做されていたことが古記録から推定できる。それに関連して服装についても、遊興的性格を持つ軽装の布衣（狩衣）はふさわしくないものとされていた。特に院政前期、院や摂関・大臣の催しに参加する時に、弁官は他の同階層の官人たちよりも、より公的な装束を着る傾向がある。それは、『中右記』記主の藤原宗忠によれば、弁官としての「礼法」に叶う着用法であったが、そのような他と異なる弁官の服装は「故実」として認識されていた。つまりある程度、慣習と化した着用法であったことが分かる。また弁官の装束は形状も、他の官人とは異なる特徴を有していた。ところで、「礼法」に叶ったあり方をするべき、という意識は、特に弁官のトップである大弁に対して強く、また大弁自身も、特にその意識を持っていたように思われるが、これは少々意外な特徴である。弁官としての実務は、主に中弁以下によって担われてきて、それも院政前期ともなると、史によって処理されるようになっていたことが先行研究で指摘されている。それほど弁官としての任務をこなさない大弁に対して特に、弁官としてのふさわしいあり方が求められていたことになる。つまりある官職のトップとは、その官職の性格を視覚的に体現する役割を持っていたことが想定できる。そのような役割ゆえに、大弁の公的な服装が「故実」、つまり貴族社会内の一定の共通認識で、あるべき姿が期待されるものになっていったのだと考えられると結論付けた。
