项目摘要

1950～60年代の近世畿内地主制史研究は、商品生産の発展と地主制的分解に着目することで、封建制から資本主義への歴史的展開を解明してきた。そこでは、19世紀前半の経済変動に対応する形で、地主が地主的発展を果たしたことが明らかにされた。これに対し報告者は、19世紀前半に地主的発展を遂げ、地主制の展開を支えた地主の力量を捉え直す立場をとった。まず、1950～60年代の近世畿内地主制史研究の成果と課題を整理し、経済的条件を重視した従来の研究に対して、報告者は農業労働力を確保しようとする地主の二面性（村役人的側面と地主的側面）を重視した。また、南泉州（和泉国南部）平野部村落を事例に、当該地域の主要産業であった和泉櫛産業の衰退が村内百姓の離村・没落を促したこと、さらには櫛産業の衰退と並行する形で、町方の繁昌による小作希望者の減少、農業労働力の不足といった問題が発生していたことを解明した。次に、このような成果をふまえたうえで、19世紀前半の要源太夫家の小作人編成を検討した。その結果、要家は、小作人を安定的に確保するために様々な戦略を駆使していたことが明らかになった。これによって、小作希望者の減少・農業労働力の不足が深刻化していた当該地域では、下層民の関心を小作（農業）に誘導し、小作人を安定的に確保する地主としての力量がなければ、地主の地主的発展はおろか、地主制の安定的拡大は不可能であったことを解明した。一方、研究代表者は、要家の地主としての側面ばかりではなく、要家の政治的中間層としての側面にも着目した。具体的には、岸和田藩七人庄屋（特権的村役人層）の役割について基礎的考察を行い、七人庄屋である要家に領主・領民から何が求められていたのかを検討した。その結果、七人庄屋要家には、支配―被支配間の調整役としての機能が期待されていたことが明らかになった。
