今年度は、「学問の自由」の政治性を、「文化自由会議」から1954年に派生して設立された「科学と自由についての委員会」におけるマイケル・ポランニーの活動に着目して考察した。第二次世界大戦の前後、共産主義批判を行うことは、知識人たちの中では困難なことであった。　この中で反共左翼と呼ばれる知識人たちが「文化自由会議」を設立し、ソヴィエト圏の共産主義政権下で抑圧されていた知識人・大学人の言論の自由や学問の自由を擁護するための活動を行った。委員会は1954年に当会議の派生的団体として設立される。委員会は、高等教育機関における「学問の自由」の擁護とその普及を目的とし、雑誌『科学と自由』の発行や、「学問の自由」に関わる問題を議論する会議の開催を行った。しかしながら、「文化自由会議」は設立当初から、いわゆるCIAから資金援助を受けていたということが暴露され、大きな批判を受ける。その批判とは、知識人の文化的活動の自由を外部の政治的権力から擁護するという理念と、実際の活動自体が政治的権力と協働していたという矛盾についてであった。この問題は委員会の活動とも無縁ではない。しかし、報告者は『科学と自由』や会議におけるポランニーの発言録などから、会議や委員会に向けられた批判が単純には当てはまらないことを明らかにした。なぜなら、その活動には必ずしもCIAやアメリカ政府の方針と反しないようなアパルトヘイト政策への抗議活動や、反共政策の一つであるマッカーシズムに対する批判なども含まれていたからである。報告者は以上から「学問の自由」の概念は、確かにある政治的権力に対抗し、またその限りにおいてある政治的権力と協同することもあり得る。しかしながら、それは特定の政治的権力における道具的価値あるいは政策の一部となるものではなく、それ独自の目的を目指した政治性であると結論づけた。
