Impulsivity in undergraduate students as measured using temporal discounting of life events

This study developed a method for investigating impulsivity in undergraduate students relative to daily events. First, a survey was used to identify events that students commonly experience in their daily lives. Then, an online experiment was conducted in which the participants were asked to choose between a less desirable event assumed to occur immediately and a more desirable event assumed to occur after a given delay period. Depending on their choices, the delay before the preferred event was adjusted until the two options were equivalent in desirability. The delays were then used to calculate indices of each student's impulsivity. The results showed that those indices correlated moderately with the conventional indices of impulsivity obtained in a similar choice situation involving delayed monetary rewards but not with the scores obtained from a questionnaire on self-control.
