Effects of unsaturated fatty acid supplementation on diabetes

People are interested in dietary supplement intake as a method for prevention of lifestyle related diseases. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of omega-3 and -6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) as supplements on diabetes mellitus, one of lifestyle related diseases. It was observed that the supplementation of eicosapentaenoic acid, omega-3 PUFA, for 6 weeks induced the decrease in plasma cholesterol both in ob/ob mice, diabetes mellitus model mice, and normal mice, and the amelioration of glucose intake in ob/ob mice. Is was suggested that the supplementation of arachidonic acid, omega-6 PUFA, may change glucose intake in normal mice, though it had no effects in ob/ob mice.
