The question of social constitution and organisation of labour generates new problems of social structural development and social integration for social sciences, regarding on the one hand conditions of a faster global network building between economic activities, global product strategies and more intense global market competition; on the other hand increased decentralisation of business organisation (e.g. lean management) and continuing pressure towards more flexibility and company internalisation of industrial relations. Unlike in the past, future relations of gainful working and the structure of society will be formed by an organisation of labour which is less dominated by the traditional gravitational centres (firm, branch, nation-state) but more by the new reference points of globalisation, regionalisation and inter-business network building. The research program initial consideration is that the new developed problems of the relation of labour and society within the European industrial states at the end of the 20th century can only be handled meaningfully by social sciences which concentrate not at the individual firm but at institutional arrangements and intermediary structures. Such an approach challenges interdisciplinarity in research and offers new chances for theoretical synthesis and innovation. Therefore the generic methodological instruments is further developed and applied to the named fields of "new regulation of labour" and "new structuring of labour" by the participating disciplines.
