本研究の大きな枠組みは、「日本におけるイスラーム認識と研究の足跡」とし、とくに研究代表者は主に西アジアを介して日本人が得たイスラーム認識の歴史的変遷を追い、他方、研究分担者の阿里木（ALIMU）は、従前より蓄積してきた日中の儒学やイスラームの思想交流史に関する知見を基に、主として日本における中国イスラームの研究史に関わる総合的な調査・分析に携わるというものである。後者は日本における中国イスラーム研究の変遷を、政治的な背景に依らない、史学的な視点から可能な限り客観的に分析・評価することを大きな目的とした。平成28年度はとりわけ戦後日本の中国イスラーム研究に焦点を当て、そうした研究の礎になったと考えられる個々の研究者の研究状況を具体的に明らかにすると同時に、戦中における個人の研究や諸機関の活動が戦後日本の中国イスラーム研究にどのように継承されたのかを再評価することに力点を置いた。研究分担者は外国人特別研究員としての研究報告を『日本における中国イスラーム研究史に関する調査研究』（15万字)というタイトルでまとめた。また、そうした成果を基礎に、現在中国語で『日本におけるイスラーム研究史―中国を中心に―』という著書の出版を準備中である。さらに、戦前の研究については、日本各地の大学・研究機関に所蔵される膨大な中国イスラーム研究関連資料の実地精査を踏まえて、日本語で学会発表を行い、貴重なコメントや助言を得ることができた。
