本研究の最終的な目的は、食物条件が異なる環境下での比較を通じて、ニホンザルの食物資源をめぐる競合とその防衛に関する適応戦略を明らかにするとともに、それが適応度に与える影響を評価することである。メスの繁殖戦略は、主に採食成功を通じて決まる。これまで蓄積されてきたニホンザルの採食生態学的な研究成果によって、採食成功のうち、食物（エネルギー、たんぱく質）の摂取に関しては、定量的に明らかになっている。一方で、採食成功を決めるもう一つの重要な要素である消費量に関しては、きわめて研究例が少ない。現状では、多くの研究で野生状態のエネルギー消費量は、一律に基礎代謝量の2倍と仮定して計算されている。実際には、個体の性、年齢、順位や活動レベルによってエネルギー消費量は異なっていると予測され、この変異の量をも積もることは、野生の霊長類の採食生態学的な知見を繁殖成功の理解に結び付けるために重要である。以上のことを背景として、酸素・水素二重標識水を用いたエネルギー消費量の推定を、さまざまな飼育条件のニホンザルで明らかにすることを、本研究の目的とした。昨年度、京都大学霊長類研究所の屋外放飼場で飼育されているニホンザル3頭について、異なる季節に二重標識水によるエネルギー消費量の推定、GPS首輪に装着したアクティビティセンサ、およびビデオによる行動の記録を行った。同様の調査を、個別ケージに飼育されたニホンザル3頭についても行った。本年度は、得られたビデオおよびセンサのデータ解析、安定同位体分析によるエネルギー消費量の推定を行い、得られた結果を、合計で3本の論文にまとめ、学術雑誌に投稿した。
