本研究の目的は、(A)デイヴィドソンの三角測量外在主義を既存の外在主義を巡る文脈に位置づけ直し、(B)一般的な外在主義が抱える問題に説得的な解決策を提示することである。こうした目的のもとで、本研究員は、まず昨年度から取り組んでいる課題(A)を続行し、デイヴィドソンの三角測量外在主義を既存の外在主義の分類に位置づけるという作業を達成した。具体的には、自身の外在主義についてデイヴィドソンが与える特徴づけには「歴史的外在主義」と「共時的外在主義」という相反する要素による「緊張」が生じているという批判に対して、デイヴィドソンの立場は一貫して「歴史的外在主義」として理解できるという見方を提示した。続いて、本研究員は、(B)の課題として、外在主義の代表的な指示決定メカニズムとされる「指示の因果説」を分析することで、意味や指示と実在の関係をめぐる問題を明らかにすることを目指した。具体的には、人工物の種名に焦点を当て、表現の指示や意味が外在的に確定されることと、表現が指示する対象がわれわれの認識と独立に実在するかどうかということとの関係を考察した。近年人工物種が自然種と同様に実在すると主張する論者はしばしば、人工物種を指示する名前（e.g.「机」）に自然種名と同じ外在主義的な指示メカニズム（「指示の因果説」）が成り立つという点を挙げる。本研究員は、このような状況を踏まえ、指示の因果説が成り立つことがなぜ人工物種の実在性に含意をもつのかを明らかにした。その際とくに、指示の因果説のふたつの要素（基づけの因果説と借用の因果説）の区別に注目し、種の実在性と関係があるのは基づけの因果説であることを指摘した。
