[目的]本研究は発展途上国の貧困層の生涯を通じた長期的な視点と一時点の短期的な視点を差異化する消費メカニズムを特定することで既存の消費メカニズムに再考と発展を促すと同時にマイクロファイナンスの貯蓄の観点に基づく政策評価に新たな指針を与えることを目標とするものである。[成果]申請者は既存の経済学で考えられていた短期的な視点と長期的な視点を一緒にする考えではなく、新しい理論の必要性を考え、短期的な視点と長期的な視点を差異化させる双曲割引（Hyperbolic discounting）に着目した。結果、既存で考えられているよりも双曲割引が存在している場合、人々の貯蓄率は低く、かつ近視眼的に行動していることが分かった。双曲割引が存在している場合に近視眼的に人々が行動することが判明したので、申請者は近年開発経済学では主流となっているフィールド実験と呼ばれる手法を用いることで双曲割引を直接導出することを目指した。双曲割引そのものが近年注目を浴びてきた概念であり、双曲割引を導出する手法は数多く存在しないが、その中でConvex Time Budget（CTB）法に注目した。フィリピンの農村を対象にCTB法を行ったところ、実際に発展途上国の人々は双曲割引を有していることが分かった。当初の予定ではフィールド実験で特定した貯蓄構造を基にマイクロファイナンスの評価を行う予定であった。貯蓄行動に関してマイクロファイナンスは大きな影響があるにもかかわらず実証的な研究が非常に少ないという事実があるためにマイクロファイナンスの研究は既存研究と一線を画す予定であったが、時間的な制約により、研究を行うことが出来なかった。しかし、特別研究員を辞退した後も引き続き研究を継続し、新たな研究成果を出していくことを目指す。
