報告者は19世紀の細胞学からの影響に着目して、ドイツの哲学者ニーチェの道徳批判を分析した。注目した点は、彼によれば人間の行為を導出しているのは、「衝動」間の闘争によって決定する最も強い衝動であるということだ。彼はこれらの「衝動」を人間に知覚されるか、または知覚され得るものとして捉えたうえで、それらの「衝動」が生じる部位は脳であると把握していた。一方で、ニーチェは細胞という場所においても「力への意志」という原始的な形式の精神が生じていると考察していた。そのうえで彼は、このような細胞の精神は人間に決して知覚されないとみなしていた。以上の分析によって、ニーチェは人間の内面で生じる複数の「衝動」を、身体における細胞の「力への意志」が闘争を通じていくつかに集約されたものとして解釈していたことが分かった。この研究成果をもとに報告者がさらに研究を推し進めたのは、そのようなニーチェの衝動論が彼の道徳批判といかにして関連付けられていたのかということだ。着目した点は、ニーチェが細胞学者Wilhelm Rouxの適応理論を評価していることだった。Rouxによれば、細胞間の闘争を通じてより外的環境に適応した細胞が生き残り、それらの細胞同士が合生して身体を形成するのだった。ニーチェはこのRouxの適応理論を行為論に応用して、各々の「衝動」が身体を構成する細胞と同数の「力への意志」に分割できるのであれば、そのような「衝動」の本質は利己性にではなく、適応性に求められると考察していた。つまりニーチェの道徳批判というのは、人間の「衝動」を利己的なものとして一括りに否定してしまうのではなく、それぞれの「衝動」を細胞の「力への意志」の集合体と解釈してその適応性を肯定する大胆な試みであったことを明らかにした。
