本研究の目的は、前方後円墳のデジタル三次元測量を通して墳丘企画論の新たな方法を確立すること、GISを用いて古墳時代後期から終末期の地域社会のネットワークの分析を行うことである。上記の目的の中でも、墳丘企画の方法論を重点的に研究しており、一年に一基、前方後円墳の測量調査を実施している。平成29年度は茨城県小美玉市に所在する舟塚古墳のデジタル三次元測量調査とGPR探査を実施した。舟塚古墳はこれまでに明治大学による発掘調査と測量調査が行われている。そしてその成果から、墳丘企画・埴輪について、大阪府高槻市に所在する同時期の大王墓：今城塚古墳との関連性が指摘されている。また、古墳が所在する霞ケ浦北岸の高浜入り地域の後期大型墳の動向を考える上で重要視されてきた古墳でもある。調査は平成30年２月１日～20日に行い、トータルステーションとレイアウトナビゲーターを用いて墳丘上にランダムに点群を測距(約44,000点)し、三次元情報を取得した。調査終了後、前年度までに実施した千葉県山武市旭ノ岡古墳と香取市三ノ分目大塚山古墳、そして舟塚古墳を合わせて、報告書：『前方後円墳の三次元復原と設計原理の考古学的研究－旭ノ岡古墳・三ノ分目大塚山古墳・舟塚古墳の測量調査報告書－』を刊行した。なお、この報告書は、３基の前方後円墳の測量調査報告のみとした。各古墳の分析や比較は今後の論文で執筆予定である。地域社会のネットワーク分析については、利根川下流南岸地域についての基礎情報の収集を終了させ、データのとりまとめに入った。以上のように、前方後円墳の測量調査及び古墳時代の社会論に迫るためのデータの蓄積と分析、分析結果の比較を行うことができた。中でも、３年間で行ってきた前方後円墳の測量調査について、報告書を刊行できた点は大きな成果である。
