本研究の主要な目的は、種別論という道具立てを用いて、同一性の本質やあり方を多角的かつ体系的に解明することである。以下に、その目的に基づき個別的な課題として取り組まれ、一定の成果をあげたものを三つ記す。（１）不可識別者同一の原理が妥当であるかどうかについては、これまで様々な分野で大きな論争を巻き起こしてきた。そこで申請者は、「同一性」の二側面という新たな着想に基づき、不可識別者同一の原理の妥当性の問題を従来にない仕方で整理・解決することができると論じた。この成果は、前年度までの研究成果を十分に利用しつつも、当初の研究プログラムで中心的な役割を果たしていた「概念主義的実在論」に本格的に踏み込むという点でも極めて有意義であった。（２）従来、認知的な個別化に種別概念の把握を要請する立場は、認知心理学上の成果や理論と衝突するという問題を抱えていた。そこで申請者は、認知的な個別化の分析を通じて、種別概念の把握がなぜ必要であるのかを認識論的な見地から明らかにし、従来の批判を回避できると示すことを試みた。この成果は、形而上学や意味論と並んで「同一性の認識論」を展開するための確固たる基盤と一定の見通しを生むこととなった。（３）Wigginsの示唆に基づき、道徳的性質との類比性の観点から、種別概念それ自体の解明にも取り組んだ。特に、道徳的性質と人間の反応（の傾向性）の間の相互依存性というアイディアを参照することで、種別概念が当初想定したよりも複雑な構造を持ち、特異な振る舞いをする概念であることが明らかとなった。この成果は、先の概念主義的実在論を洗練・発展させる観点を与えると同時に、先の「同一性」の二側面の内実に対しても実り豊かな示唆をもたらした。以上、三つの課題達成および前年度までの成果により、同一性概念の体系的解明という当初の計画の大部分は達成することができたと考えられる。
