研究実施計画書に基づき、本年度は英語史における否定倒置構文の発達過程を明らかにすることを目標に据えた。より具体的に述べると、①中英語期に否定倒置が義務的でなかったこと、②近代英語期にnotで始まる否定倒置構文が消失したこと、という史実に着目し、これらの疑問に率直な説明を与えることを試みた。①に関しては、前年度、現代英語に対して提案した否定倒置の仕組みを基盤としながら、T-to-C移動が無くとも否定辞neとT主要部はきちんと単一の転送領域内に収まっているため、否定倒置は不要だと主張した。Ingham (2007)が強調するように、中英語期における否定倒置の欠如は研究史上長年に渡る不可解な事実であったので、本研究はこの事実に一定の説明を与えたという点で今後の議論の叩き台としての意義をもつ。②に関しては、Pintzuk (1999)における句構造の競合という考えを援用しながら、句タイプのnotが主要部タイプのnotによって次第に淘汰されたことで文頭へ前置不可能になったため、notで始まる否定倒置構文は消失したと提案した。近代英語期のnotのステータスについては、先行研究の間で句派と主要部派の主張が対立してきたので、本研究はそれらの両方が存在したと主張することで、先行研究の議論に適切な折り合いをつけることに成功した。上記の通時的考察を基に一本の英文論文を執筆し、指導教官と相談した後に、全国誌English Linguistics 33巻に投稿した。その後、2回に渡る査読を通過して無事掲載に至った(同学術誌P. 307-339)。また、この論文によって2016年度EL論文賞を受賞した。さらに、これまでの研究成果を無理に引き延ばそうとせず、部分的抜き出しと循環的線形化という新テーマにも着手し、その研究成果の一部は日本英語学会第34回大会口頭発表において既に公表済みである。
