本年度の研究計画として挙げたものは、（1）科学的宗教理論と既存の宗教理論との比較及び（2）科学的宗教理論の社会的背景の解明である。このうち、（1）については、科学的宗教理論と既存の宗教理論の共通点・相違点を明らかにするために、前者として進化心理学・宗教認知科学の文献を、後者として宗教学者ミルチャ・エリアーデの文献及びエリアーデに関する研究を分析した。以上の研究成果は、2016年8月の日本進化学会における「進化はなぜ「進歩」だと理解されるのか―人文諸科学における「進化」の語の由来と発展―」及び2016年9月の日本宗教学会における「エリアーデ研究の現況と現代におけるエリアーデの意義」として公表を行った。（2）については、科学的宗教理論の成立する社会的背景として、米国及び英国における反宗教思想の現状の調査を行った。そのために無神論・世俗主義・ヒューマニズムを推進する組織の書籍を分析したほか、英国においてヒューマニズム組織の開催する集会の観察を行い、その実態を調査した。また、日本国内における科学と宗教思想との結びつきを明らかにするために、仏教と科学の関わりについての文献や団体の活動の調査を行った。以上の研究成果を前年度に行った調査結果と合わせ、論文及び学会発表において公表した。国外の反宗教思想についての研究成果は宗教情報リサーチセンター刊行の『ラーク便り』に研究ノートとして発表した。日本国内における科学と宗教思想との結びつきに関しては、中央学術研究所刊『中央学術研究所紀要』に「現代日本における仏教と科学の関わり：「科学と宗教」の観点から」として発表した。これに加えて、学会International Society for Historians of Atheism, Secularism, and Humanismの大会において日本国内の反宗教思想についての発表を行った。
