项目摘要

第二次世界大戦中の堀内の活動にかんする先行研究はほとんどなく、戦後の純粋抽象への傾倒の背景にどのような思想的転換があったのか推察することは困難であった。今年度、書簡調査が可能になったことで、日中戦争期の活動が明らかになった。前衛的な表現を志向しつつも自己検閲せざるを得ない状況や、終戦前後の抽象美術に対する考えの変容を具体的に解明することができた。以上の研究成果は資料を付して論文として発表した。日仏会館等を通じた戦時中のフランス文化の受容については続けて調査をおこなう。堀内は著述家としても知られるが、1950年代前半の執筆記事と作品、旧蔵書等の一次資料調査で得た情報を比較分析した結果、戦後に購入した、特定の幾何学抽象系の雑誌からの引用や作品様式の影響を明らかにすることができた。航路移動によって世界の距離が縮まりつつあったこの時代、美術雑誌は受信者・発信者双方にとってより戦略的に利用されるようになった。堀内も所属した現代美術懇談会の作家とこの雑誌は50年代を通してかかわりを持っており、その背景には、抽象表現の国際化において日本と欧米の橋渡し役となった前衛書雑誌『墨美』の関与が認められた。以上の研究成果を論文として発表した。この2年は調査状況に合わせて研究内容も1940～50年代が中心となった。なかでも堀内という作家を一事例に、個別的かつ具体的な検証を重ねたことにより、1950年代の幾何学抽象の広まりを国際的な視野からどのように捉えるべきか、また同時期の抽象表現の展開を関西/東京という国内の地理的な問題から見なおす視座を得たことは大きな収穫であった。この２つの視点から今後研究を進めていく。
