平成29年度は前年度に引き続き、特に1970年代後半以降の大江作品を対象とし、それらの作品中に繰り返し描出される特権的なトポスとしての「谷間の村」──「谷間」および「在」と呼ばれる集落と、それらの高みに広がる「森」によって構成される──に着目して、研究を行った。大江は、自らが幼少時代を過ごした故郷、愛媛県喜多郡内子町大瀬（旧：大瀬村）の地形、特徴的な自然物や建造物、そしてその地が有する歴史・伝承を明らかに参照しつつも、それを独自に歪形することで、彼の作品世界における「谷間の村」のランドスケープ、そしてそのランドスケープと密接に結びついた形で語られる、「谷間の村」の神話と歴史を創出した。本研究の第一の目的は、この「谷間の村」のランドスケープの作品ごとの変遷、そして登場人物が「谷間の村」において、特定の「場所」に根ざした集合的記憶に接触する際の描写を分析し、大江作品における「場所」と「記憶」の問題系の相関を明らかにすることであった。ここで言う「場所」に根ざした集合的記憶との接触とは、単にその地で起きた過去の出来事を史実として認識するのではなく、登場人物が何ものかとのシャーマニックな交感を通して、過去の事象を体感する、という形をとるものである。本年度は、昨年度から取り組んでいるこのようなシャーマニックな交感の描写の分析を、大江が80年代以降集中的に取り組んだ「魂」、あるいは「神」といった超越的存在をめぐる思索とも結びつけて考えることで、大江の中期から後期の作品群を「場所」という共通の切り口から体系的に考察することを試みた。また、昨年度行った内子町大瀬での現地調査の結果を踏まえ、大江がその故郷の地形や歴史に対しどのようなまなざしを向けていたのかを明らかにすることで、現実世界と作品世界を横断する形で「谷間の村」というトポスを作り上げた彼の想像力のダイナミズムを明らかにした。
