本研究は、人口減少時代の地方郡部の高校と地域のあり方を分析することを目的とした。地理的隔絶性が高く一つの地方社会として同定しやすい中山間地域で調査を行った。地方郡部では、人口がいち早く減少し、高校入学者の減少と学校規模縮小にともなう高校の魅力の低下と統廃合問題が生じていることが分かった。地域存続と高校存続の問題が連動していることが分かった（「地域存続の生命線としての高校存続」）。さらに、こうした事態を受けて、地域活性化と高校魅力化が連動しながら進んでいることが分かった（「地域活性化の最前線としての高校魅力化」）。高校の地域資源を生かした教育の取り組みである地域課題解決型学習（CPBL: Community Problem Based Learning）の導入を分析した。これまでの受験指導を主眼とした教科書型学習中心であった中山間地域の教育に地域課題解決型学習がコーディネーターなどの新しい教育の担い手が現れることによって葛藤を経ながら導入されていく過程が分かった。高校生の地元地域と都市部への将来の地域移動（都鄙（とひ）移動）の志向に関して量的な分析を行った。高校卒業後、大半の生徒は地元から都市部へと流出するが将来は地元地域での居住を希望していることおよび性別・成績等によってその傾向に違いがあることが分かった。高校魅力化の授業実践の中で行われる都鄙間高大協同研究を通じて高校生の地域移動とキャリア形成の意識を分析した。中山間地域の高校生はかつてのように無条件に都市部へのあこがれを持っていないことが分かった。地元地域に対する劣等感よりも、地域住民や行政からの期待を感じ、将来地元地域に貢献しようと考えていることが分かった。高校卒業後の都市部への移動も将来の地元地域への貢献に資する経験の獲得をしようとしていることがうかがわれた。
