本研究の目的は、多様な人間集団を包摂したオスマン帝国の縮図としての帝都イスタンブル社会の多様性と多元的統治を明らかにすることである。そのために、都市の重要な構成要素であった街区を考察の対象とし、具体的には4つの研究課題に取り組んだ：1.1730年騒乱後の秩序維持と公共空間の変容；2.街区の再編；3.街区と移住者；4.街区社会と共同体の秩序。前年度に継続してイェール大学に拠点を置き研究に従事した。まず、これまで個別に検討してきた研究課題1と3について時系列的に整理しなおした。この作業を通して、反乱後、政府による秩序維持強化の試みの中で、全住民を法廷台帳に記録させるという形で、街区が国家管理に統合されていく様子が明らかになった。次に、研究課題2について、18世紀初頭の婚姻締結に関する法令発布後に法廷台帳に記された五千数百件に及ぶ「婚姻障害の不存在」の証言に着目した。これらの記録の分析を通して、同法令が、「街区における居住」と「個人の貞節に対する共同体管理」の結びつきを強固にした様子を明らかにした。この成果を、国際学会CIEPOで発表した。本年度後半は、研究課題4に取り組み、特定の個人が集団訴訟により街区から追放される事例約250件の分析を進めた。共同体の連帯責任に依拠したオスマン帝国の統治様式と、そのなかで集団証言が果たした役割という観点から考察し、その成果を、ハーバード大学中東研究センターにて報告した。この報告を土台に、マフムト1世治世の政治的混乱と治安悪化、社会不安の広まりという時代状況の中に位置づけつつ、研究課題1-3の議論を総括するものとしてまとめなおすことを試みた。追放刑は、移住者管理（研究課題3）と異なり、その実施に政府が直接介入することはなかったが、政府が目指した住民の貞節管理（研究課題1と2）は、街区民の一見自発的な集団行動を通しても浸透していったことを論じた。
