本研究の目的は、多様な住民が生きたオスマン帝都イスタンブルの都市社会構造を、都市行政の末端組織であった街区に着目し解明することである。本年度は、18世紀イスタンブルの都市空間に反映されたオスマン帝国の社会的・政治的変化を多角的に考察し、その変容過程における転換点としてマフムト1世時代（1730‐54年）を位置づけることで、本研究課題を完成させることを目指した。1730年騒乱後に即位したマフムト1世の治世は、オスマン朝君主の権威の拠り所としても重要性を増した帝都の秩序がますます不安定になっていった時代である。この時代、秩序維持政策の根幹を為したのは、地方からの移住者、及び女性・非ムスリムの管理強化であった。イスタンブルへの移住者の流入という問題を背景に、人口管理の単位として街区の組織化が進むと同時に、移住者が都市社会へ統合される過程でその媒介組織として街区が重要な役割を果たしたことを明らかにした。他方、女性・非ムスリムの管理強化については、イスタンブルの「公共空間」の社会的変容という文脈の中に位置づけ論じた。1730年騒乱後に慣習となった祝祭時における女性の外出禁止、及び同時期に顕在化した公衆浴場におけるムスリム女性・非ムスリム女性の混浴問題という二つの現象は、マフムト1世時代の秩序維持強化の試みの中で生じたものであり、当時のイスタンブルの「公共空間」が、オスマン君主が社会秩序の安定を表現し権力を誇示するための場となっていったことを論じた。
