During hot rolling process, due to the direct interaction of the work roll with the hot strip and the repeated cycles of roll heating and cooling the work roll will change its geometry. This directly influences the quality criteria of the rolled strip. On the other hand, due to the thermal fatigue, the work rolls may wear. This will also directly influence the quality (thickness and flatness) of the rolled strip. The strip flatness is a complex criterion which is depending on various process parameters. Until now, numerical modelling techniques are not available to simulate the overall process considering the complex interdependent parameters. Present modelling methods will address individual process parameters and conditions. The inter-dependent process parameters such as thermomechanical effects of the rolls and the roll wear on the strip thickness profile were completely ignored. With this research project proposal, an efficient Finite Element modelling method will be developed for the computation of interaction effects during hot rolling process. The developed model will consider the thermo-mechanical effects of the strip as well as work roll. The computed temperature distribution of the work roll will be validated with the data from the industry. The second major aspect of this research work will be the computation of wear in combination with the Finite Element modelling. The proposed wear models will be validated with the real process production data from the industry.
