本研究は、ヨーロッパ言語共通参照枠(CEFR)の英語に関する参照レベル記述の一環として日本人英語学習者の関係代名詞の使用に注目し、6段階ある各CEFRレベルを特徴付ける言語特性である基準特性(criterial features)をコーパスデータを用いて抽出することを目的とした。平成29年度は計画の通り、国内外の学会等で資料収集を行い、それらの資料から得た知見を利用して研究を行った。具体的には、日本人英語学習者の書き言葉コーパスであるJEFLLコーパス、話し言葉コーパスであるNICT JLEコーパス、CEFR準拠のELT教材コーパスを対象として, 関係詞の使用頻度及びエラーの分析を行なった。それぞれの分析には、表層形による分類に加え、 第二言語習得論における習得順序を示した仮説であるNoun Phrase Accessibility Hierarchy（NPAH：Keenan & Comrie, 1977）およびSO Hierarchy Hypothesis（SOHH：Hamilton, 1994）による分類を用いた。その結果, 関係詞の使用はB1レベル以降に特徴的に観察されることがわかった。分類別に見ると, どのレベルでもNPAH, SOHHの習得順序に従う頻度が観察され, その階層を保ったままレベルが上がるにつれて頻度が高くなったが, 表層形においては書き言葉か話し言葉かによって頻度が異なることが明らかとなった。エラー分析については, 中間レベルで関係節内のbe動詞が欠落するエラーが多く見られる点に注目して分析した結果, 関係詞による後置修飾とその他の分詞による後置修飾を混同していることが示唆された。この成果は、英語コーパス研究第25号に投稿し、採択されている。
