本年度は当初の予定のとおり、幕末知識人とりわけ動乱期にあってなお広義の文筆活動に自己の領分を見出した知識層――いわゆる「文士」――の思想と実践の検討をおこなった。またその際、同じく予定どおり、広瀬旭荘と梁川星巌のふたりに焦点をあてて、前者については全集所収の『日間瑣事備忘』の分析および書簡史料についての調査を、後者については基本史料と目される『註解梁川星巌全集』全五巻（梁川星巌全集刊行会、一九五六～一九五八年）の校訂や資料収集の精度を検討するところから、研究に着手した。ちなみに、あわせて、旭荘および星巌の周辺に位置する文士たち（小野湖山や河野鉄兜、柴秋村など）の関連文献も調査し一部に講究を加えている。また以上に加えて、本年度は、「武士と学問」をテーマとする学会シンポジウムでの報告の機会を得たことから、従来の予定をすこしはずれ、近世政治思想史における「武士と学問」をめぐる問題について、本研究がいかなる寄与をなしうるかを検討し、発表した。具体的には、体制イデオロギー論が失効してのち、<学問と遊藝>や<武士と官僚制>といった観点から議論されてきた同問題について、「名」という観点から、新たな議論が提示できるのではないかという仮説である。この仮説の検討は、文壇という戦場の覇者をもって自ら任じた広瀬旭荘や、学文をとおした「名」の獲得を嫌忌した活動家たち――いわゆる「志士」――の思想と実践とを考えていくうえでも、示唆に富むものとなった。ただし、途中で翌年度の研究員辞退がきまったことを受け、計画には大きな修正が迫られた。予定していたいくつかの史料調査をとりやめ、本来は来年度以降の検討対象に属するテクストの蒐集に資金を費やし、分析をあとまわしにした。とはいえ、その成果もあって研究の基盤整備を十分進めることができたといえる。それらを活用し、今後も研究を勧めていく予定である。
