项目摘要

報告者は証拠性表現と推量表現の意味的差異を形式意味論の観点から理論化することを目標にしている。令和元年度はこの研究目標達成のために「両者の差異を示すデータを説明するための一般化を行い、それを理論化すること」を目指した。本年度は特に(A)時間的制約と(B)状況意味論を用いた分析の2 点について研究を行った。以下それぞれの進捗を示す。(A)時間的制約について報告者は去年度University of British Columbia に客員研究員として赴任していた際のスーパーバイザーと議論を進めていくうえで、証拠性表現または推量表現に埋め込まれている命題（以下、発話命題）の証拠となる命題（以下、証拠命題）を話者が獲得した時間（Evidence Acquisition Time, EAT）と、発話命題が真になる最初の瞬間（以下、Earliest(p)）の間の時間関係が証拠性表現および推量表現の意味に大きく関わっていることを発見した。そして、そのスーパーバイザーと報告者は、「ようだ」とapparently には“Earliest(p)がEATに先行する”, should には“EATがEarliest(p)に先行する”という時間的制約が存在すること、およびmust にはそのような制約が見られないことを発見・理論化した。(B)状況意味論的分析について間接証拠性表現「ようだ」やapparently について、Takubo (2009), Krawczyk (2012), Davis and Hara (2014)などの先行研究の予測では、「なぜ証拠命題が真なのか」という問いに対して「発話命題が真であるから」という返答が可能であるような場合のみ、間接証拠性表現が使用可能であった。しかし、報告者はその予測に従わない例を発見し、報告者は状況意味論を用いた新たな提案を行った。
