本研究の目的は複数の媒体やジャンルを対象に漢字含有率（文章に占める漢字の割合）を調査し，更に漢字含有率に影響を与える要因を特定することにより，現代日本における漢字使用の実態を通時的・計量的な観点から明らかにすることである。この目的の達成に向けて本研究では①小説を対象とした調査に基づいて漢字含有率に影響を与える要因を探り出す方法論を整備すること，②新聞を対象とした調査を実施し，その方法論の適用可能性について検討すること，③小説や新聞の調査に基づいて漢字使用の実態を記述すること，④小説や新聞のデータを構築することの4点について取り組んだ。まず，①では既に漢字含有率について報告している芥川龍之介賞受賞作品を改めて取り上げ，漢字含有率に影響を与える要因を探り出す方法論について検討した。そのために語種（和語・漢語・外来語）の構成比率との関わりに着眼したが，そもそも語種の認定方法について課題が残されていたことから語種を認定する客観的で再現可能な手順を提示し，これに基づいて漢字含有率に影響を与える要因を探り出す方法論を整備した。次に②では新聞における漢字含有率について調査した上で①において提示した方法論によって新聞における漢字含有率に影響を与える要因について探り得るかを検討した。その結果，新聞に特有の事情はあるものの概ね①の方法論を適用し得ることを確認した。続いて③では小説の調査と新聞の調査との比較によって両者の共通点と相違点とを記述することを通して現代日本における漢字使用の実態を巨視的な立場から明らかにした。最後に④では計画に多少の変更を加えつつ小説や新聞のデータの構築に継続的に取り組んだ。なお，①の成果は『計量国語学』において公表済みであり，④の成果の一部は①の補足を兼ねて『日本語と日本文学』において公表予定である。また，①から③までの成果を踏まえて博士論文を執筆した。
