巨匠ピーテル・ブリューゲル（父）の次男であるヤン・ブリューゲル（父）は、動植物や風景の専門画家として生前より高い評価を受けてきた。本研究では、ヤンが描いた物語画に着目し、これまで等閑視されてきた画家の本領域における活動実態を明らかにし、既存の絵画観において見過ごされてきた文化的文脈を再構成することを目的とする。五年次にあたる本年度は、風景の専門画家であるヤン・ブリューゲル（父）が、物語表現を構想し発展させる過程を、素描や物語テキスト、寓意的モチーフなどの分析に基づいて解明することを試みた。人物表現を得意とする通常の物語画家は、物語画制作に際して、人物の身振りや感情表現、配置など、人物主体で構想を練ることが一般的である。これに対して、風景表現を得意とするヤンが物語画を描く場合には、まず、各地を逍遥して印象的な実景を写生し、その風景の特性に見合った文学的典拠を求め、登場人物を風景に効果的に配置して物語画として完成させる、という手順を用いていた。さらに、同種の物語構造をもつ他の文学的典拠を用いて、同じ風景を用いながらも異なる主題の物語画に仕上げるというヴァリエーションの制作手法も解明された。例えば、ヤンは、1604年のプラハ滞在の折にプラハ近郊の森で目にした、大木を境に左右に分かれる、印象的な森の分かれ道を写生素描にしたため（大英博物館蔵）、この「分かれ道」を利用して「エルサレム入市前のイエス」を主題とする油彩画を制作し（1604年、ウフィツィ美術館蔵）、その後、さらに「悪魔に誘惑されるイエス」を主題とする油彩画（1604年頃、ウィーン美術史美術館蔵）を描いている。つまり、分かれ道の実景に触発されて、「岐路に立つ人物」という物語主題が選択されたのである。このように、ヤンにおいては、「舞台設定」を主体に物語が選択されるという、通常の物語画とは逆の制作過程が確認されるのである。
