本研究は、奈良時代の寺院造営を担う役所であった造寺司の下位組織「官営造仏所」に仏像制作の造形的共通規範が存在したことを明らかにするものである。 研究遂行にあたっては、①仏像各箇所法量の写真計測、②造形的共通規範の検討、③工人が制作した下図(したず)を明らかにする、④文献にみえる造仏記事の考察、⑤中国と朝鮮半島の作例検討、⑥発表、というプロセス予定だった。これにしたがい平成三十年度(2018)は①をおこない、2年目は①の画像加工と④の文献整理、3年目は②のための作図及び法量計測のためのソフト「Kuraves-MD」(倉敷紡績)の導入と進めてきた。本研究は平成三十年度に３年間の予定で開始したが、海外調査を予定していた令和元年度末(2020)から世界的なコロナの流行により渡航不能になり、海外での資料取得ができなくなった。こうしたなかで令和三年からは延長措置をいただき、①③④を充実させることに専念してきた。さらに別研究で滞在したエジプトで、神殿や墓室にみえる下絵の画像を収集した。エジプト美術は本研究と時代も地域も大きく異なるものの下絵がのこされている箇所が多く、作画過程がよくわかる。とくに下絵の段階で墨と朱を使い分けてエスキースを重ねる技法は、本研究にも大いに参考になった。そして令和四年度は国内のデータのみで②を熟考した結果、新たな糸口を発見したため新規研究として基盤研究(C)に応募して採択されるに至った。そもそも本研究は、古代寺院がいかに多角的総合的に造営されていたのか解明するための核を検討するものである。寺院造営を類推できる文献である資財帳や写経所、造仏所、造寺司関係の書類には細かいところまでは記載されておらず、現存する材料から理解していくほかない。しかしながら新規研究は本研究を軸に展開するため、令和五年度は同時進行することでより密度の濃い仕上げができるものと考えている。
