项目摘要

近代イギリスにおいて「ふたつの文化」への乖離をもたらした要因のひとつに都市の教育と田舎の教育がある。(1) 政治・経済の中枢を担う人材を育成する都市の教育と市民・労働者教育を旨とする田舎の教育の乖離がいつ、どのように始まったのか。(2)また、高度な職能が求められるようになった19世紀末より文系文化と理系文化の分離が顕著となる。この分離をもたらした要因と、分離がもたらした功罪について考察を行なった。この考察を深めるなかで、(1)と(2)の分離もしくは分断を克服する動きとして、William Morris(1834-1896)を中心としたArts & Crafs運動や1960年代のPopular Arts活動が重要であるという認識にいたった。Arts & Crafts運動は、イギリスの近代史にあって、産業革命がもたらした社会の変化への反応を集約する社会主義運動だとひとまずいっていいだろう。従来、科学的社会主義（マルクス主義）と比較して、「空想的」と批判されてきたこれらの経験が、「ふたつの文化」を架橋する長期的なプロジェクトであったという認識にいたっている。Popular Arts活動の特徴は、20世紀半ば以降に高度消費社会が到来してもなお、「ふつうの人びと」による日常の文化生産の重要性を唱えた点である。その意味で、Stuart Hallが始めたこの活動は、MorrisのArts & Crafts運動の系譜に属している。「生産者」と「消費者」、「テクノロジー開発者」と「テクノロジー使用者」との分断が自明となったこの時期、その活動のなかから、クラブを拠点とするThe Beatlesの音楽活動やブールバール演劇も生まれている。その過程を重点的に明らかにしたいと考えているが、研究はやや遅れている。また、Morris の理念と実践を知るために、Morris文献を調査するとともに、Morris研究において必読の E. P. Thompson著 William Morris の翻訳を行なっている。

Stuart Hall is the beginning of the Morris Arts & Crafts movement.
