本研究の目的は、第一言語・第二言語における知覚的補完能力（＝人間の脳が崩れた情報を補完して理解する能力）を調べることにある。今年度は、これまで行ってきた知覚的補完の実験結果について横断的に俯瞰し、考察を深めた。特に、英語の母語話者と第二言語習得者（母語：日本語、第二言語：英語）が、知覚的補完の際に、語彙情報（有意味語 vs. 無意味語）、音素の情報（摩擦音 vs. 閉鎖音）、音響情報（音声波形の有無）をどのように処理しているかについて、これまでの実験結果を踏まえて考察した。その結果、英語の母語話者と第二言語習得者の知覚的補完における共通点や差異を確認した。まず、音声波形の一部（＝音素に呼応する部分）を物理的に削除した場合、英語の母語話者も第二言語習得者も「存在しない音を聞く」という知覚的補完（錯聴）を経験することがわかった。一方で、母語話者は「語彙情報」と「音素・音響情報」の全てを使って知覚的補完を行うが、第二言語習得者は「音素・音響情報」に頼りがちであることがわかった。一方で、音声波形全体の時間配列を崩した場合（＝元の音声波形が存在しない時間反転音声）、母語話者も第二言語習得者も「語彙情報」に頼って音声を知覚的に補完することがわかった。また、母語話者はそれに加えて「音素・音響情報」を使って知覚的補完をするが、第二言語習得者は「音素・音響情報」を活用できない可能性が示唆された。この結果から、人間が崩れた音声を知覚的に補完して理解する場合には、音声波形の崩れた範囲が小さければ「音」の情報に着目して情報を処理するが、更に語彙情報を使って情報処理出来るかどうかが母語話者と第二言語習得者の違いであった。また、音声波形の崩れた範囲が大きければ「語彙」の情報に着目して情報を処理するが、更に音素・音響情報を使って情報処理出来るかどうかが母語話者と第二言語習得者の違いであった。
